Examples : -
madi (wedding) gaDjaa? ooTa gaDjaa?

Stay in Malaya Maruta guest house for the night. You can cover Kode kallu and Balekallu gudda on Sunday.

Kodachadri

About the place:
Kodachadri is one of the most famous trekking spots in Karnataka. The place gets the name from one plant called ‘Kodasa’ or ‘Kodaja’ and adri means mountain. However over the time the name has changed from Kodasadri or Kodajadri to Kodachadri. It is at a height of 4400 ft above sea level.

Getting there –
Mangalore – Kundapura – Hemmadi (take a right turn here from NH-17) – Kollur - (140kms).
Kollur– 12km – Karakatta (take a right turn) - 10kms – Kodachadri OR Kollur – 2 km – Gateway to Arasinagundi falls (Take a right turn) – 15km – Kodachadri.

Frequent private buses are available from Mangalore to Kollur. You have following options, once you reach kollur.
From Kollur,
1) Hire a jeep/car till the peak, if you are going on family tour and don’t want to trek.
2) Hire a jeep/car till the base, if you are looking at moderate trekking of 4 - 5 km.
3) Get onto the bus going to Nagara (in the afternoon at about 1:45). Get down at Karakatta. Take a right turn. From here it is 10 km trek. 4 – 5 km of easy walk in a jeep track and 4 km of climbing. Opt for this if you are looking at good trekking.
4) Start from Kollur. After crossing 1.5 to 2 km you will see a board to your right for Arasinagundi falls and Kodachadri. There is one small bridge very near-by. Keep that as the landmark. From this point it is 15km trek to Kodachadri. Opt for this if you want to be a bit adventurous, because you have a great chance of getting lost in the forest:-))

Best time to Visit: October to May

Where to Stay:
You can camp on the hill if you are well equipped with sleeping bags, water, food, torch etc.
If you are on family tour or don’t want to stay outside, you can stay in
1) Bhat’s house
2) One more house:-)) Lol
3) Guest house
These do not require an advance booking.

Places to Visit:
1) Sarvajna Peetha: This is the highest point in Kodachadri. This is supposed to be the place where Adi Shankaracharya offered Pooja to Devi.

2) Chitramoola: This is a small waterfall on the mountain top.

Near by places:
1) Hindlu mane falls
This is a series of waterfalls (some say it has a series of 14 waterfalls, including many small waterfalls). This is bit difficult to reach and you will have to do some rock climbing to reach the final cascade. It is 4 to 5 km from Nittoor village of Hosanagara Taluk. After Nittoor you will come across a bridge. Take a right turn here and then walk for 4 km. There are 2 -3 houses near the falls. You will need their help to reach the waterfalls.

This place can also be reached from Kodachadri. But the path is very misleading. Don’t try the reverse route of Hindlumane to Kodachadri.

2) Arasinagundi falls
The most beautiful waterfalls in Kodachadri region. After crossing 1 – 2 km from Kollur you will reach a bridge. To the right side of the bridge is a gateway and a jeep track. Arasinagundi is 4 – 5 km from this point. After crossing 4 km on the jeep track you will come across a board. Nothing is legible in this board. All you can see is graffiti. One small path goes downward to your right. This path will lead you to Arasinagundi waterfalls. Many people give up in the middle and think that they have lost the way. Don’t be one among them:-)

You can avoid the trekking of 4 km if you get a prior permission from forest department of Kollur and take a jeep till the sign board. It might cost rs. 30 per head.

3) Belkal Teertha
Another waterfall near Kollur. This involves a trek route of 6km.

4) Mookambika Temple
The famous Mookambika temple is in the heart of Kollur. Please search the net for more details.

5) Someshwara Beach, Byndoor
Someshwara Beach is in Byndoor, 27 km from Kollur. From Kollur you will get private buses (at a frequency of every 15 minutes to 30 minutes) to Byndoor. From Byndoor hire an auto and go to Someshwara. It is nearly 2 km from Byndoor. One resort is also there in this place. Please read my blog Abbigundi for more details.

6) Abbigundi waterfalls
One of the most beautiful waterfalls which requires a moderate to difficult trekking to reach the place. Please read my blog on Abbigundi for more details.

Not to Miss: Sunrise and Sunset.

Suggested Itinerary:
Day 1 : Start early morning. Go to Kollur temple. Have afternoon meal in the temple. Get onto the bus (for 10km trek) or hire a vehicle to the base. Start trekking. Stay for the night in Kodachadri.
Day 2: Ask the route to Hindlumane falls in Kodachadri and climb down to that place.
Or Climb down. Go to Arasina gundi falls.

You can also go for one day trip of Arasinagundi, Belkal teertha or Hindlumane falls.

Abbigundi falls

How to get there:
Abbigundi is 10 to 12 km from Byndoor. Byndoor is 128 km North of Mangalore on NH-17. You will see a ‘Janata Rattubai Girl’s High School’ board after crossing about 200 meters from Byndoor. It is on the foothills of Ottinene hill. Take a right here (towards east). You will come across a Konkan railway tunnel to your left. Keep going in this road till the dead end. After crossing around 5 km you will reach Maddodi village. After crossing further 3 km you will come to a point where 3 roads meet. The other road is from Shiroor. Continue in the road which is eastward. You will finally reach ‘Koosalli’. There is one lone house. The trek starts from this point.

It falls in seven steps and total height of the falls is around 380 feet. You can go till the second step from the bottom easily (even this involves making your own way through the thick forest).

Nearest railway station:
Byndoor. But not all train stops here. Hiring an own vehicle is highly recommended. Approximate time of travel is 3 hours (From M’lore to Koosalli village).

Category:
It is moderate to difficult trekking and involves jumping over big rocks and not suited for family tour. This place can also serve as a picnic spot, if your destination is only the stream and not the falls.

Best time to Visit:
November to February.
It will be inaccessible during rainy season. After February there will hardly be any water. Best of Best time is late November to December, since you would face less difficulty in trekking and with the river still in full flow.

Where to Stay:
a) Kshitija Nesara Dhama
Kshtitija Nesara dhama is a forest department guest house. There are 3 cottages and they charge around 300 rs./day (Not sure. Please confirm). But they will not provide any food and you will have to arrange for that yourself. You can get the food packed in Byndoor. The best thing is that these cottages are on the hill top close to the Arabian Sea, from where you can get the glimpse of River and the sea flowing side by side. The full moon day is ideal and imagine a campfire in such a setting:-). But you would need the prior permission from the Forest department of Byndoor to stay here.

b) Sai Vishram beach resort
There is one beach resort started recently. They provide only Vegetarian food. They arrange the boat riding as well. Please follow this link - http://www.saivishram.com/Home.htm

c) Turtle bay beach resort
This resort is in Trasi famous for Maravante beach. Please follow the link - http://www.turtlebayeco.com/

Near by places of intrest:
a) Chaktikal Falls
This falls will be visible to you when you are on the way to Abbigundi. But very few people have been to this place.

b) Kshitija Nesara Dhama –
It is about 2 to 3 km from Byndoor. After Byndoor you have to continue in NH-17 (towards north) for about a km. You will come across Raghavendra mutt to your left (after climbing Ottinene hill). By the side of the Raghavendra mutt is a road (westward) which leads you to this view point.

c) Seneshwara temple Byndoor
This temple has historical importance and has Hoysala architecture. It is in the heart of Byndoor and anyone in Byndoor can give you the pointer to this temple.

d) Maravante Beach
Maravante beach is 20 km south of Byndoor on NH-17. Here NH-17 is sandwiched between river Sowparnika and Arabian Sea.

e) Kollur
Kollur is 28 km east of Byndoor. To go to Kollur go southward from Byndoor on NH-17 for around 1.2 km. You will come to Yedthare village and take a left turn (towards east). It is 27km from this point.

Suggested itinerary:
Start from M’lore on an early Saturday morning. It takes 3 hours to reach Koosalli. The trek to the falls will take another hour. After visiting the falls go to Byndoor, pack the food and go to Kshitija Nesara dhama (You should have done an advance booking) or stay in the SaiVishram beach resort. Stay there for the night. The next morning you can go to Arasinagundi falls and Kollur temple or go to Murdeshwara and Apsara konda falls in Honnavara.

Caution:
The place is full of big rocks and also will be slippery. Be careful. Beware of snakes. Also there is no nearby place where you get good food. So pack your food. Carry first aid box. It is an essential here. Carry a set of clothes if you want to get into water. Also please do not jump into water on the second step if the river is in full flow. There will be an undercurrent of water.

Devakaaru Falls

How to go there?
Devakaaru is at about 55 - 60 km from Karwar. From Karwar take the Belgaum route and go to Kadra (around 35 km). From Kadra take the route to Kodasalli (30 - 35 km). About 11 km before Kodasalli you will find a dilapidated bus stop (Devakaaru cross) and a very old signboard (to the right side). Identifying this spot is bit difficult. The trek starts from here. You have to walk for about 10 – 15 minutes in the mud road on the right side. You will get to backwaters of Kali River. You need to shout loudly for the boatmen from the other side to arrive. The boat will arrive after about 45 minutes.

After crossing the river you need to walk further for about 4 to 5 km to get to the falls. You have to take the help of local people to guide you. The path to the falls is full of big slippery rocks. So be careful. If you are adventurous you can go very near to the falls.

Devakaaru village is at the foothills, hence the name ‘Devakaaru falls’. It is also known as ‘Vajra falls’. This village is connected to outside world only through the boats. It has no electricity, no telephone or any other basic facilities. There are nearly 50 families living in this hamlet. People are very helpful and you can approach anyone and stay in their house. Please carry rations (rice etc.). People here walk 6 to 8 km and travel 15 km to get the rations.

Best Time: From October to early Febraury.

You need to hire your own vehicle. You can plan one day or two day trip to here. If you are planning for one day, make sure that you arrive in Devakaaru cross as early as possible in the morning.

Kathana (Jaagatika Kannadigara KooTa)

Kathana (Jaagatika Kannadigara KooTa)da paravaagi namaskaaragaLu.

Who are we?
‘Kathana’ (Jaagatika Kannadigara KooTa) is a group of like minded Kannadaabhimaani software engineers from across the globe. We are determined to do something useful for Kannada literature. We conducted State level Katha Spardhe this year with an intention of creating a platform for budding Kannada writers.

How was the Katha Spardhe conducted?
Katha spardhe was initiated in October end. Here is the first paper report that we published regarding the competition. http://thatskannada.oneindia.in/news/2005/10/27/kathe.html

We are partnering with 'Raghavendra Prakaashana' of Ankola (Uttara Kannada) to conduct the competition. ‘Kathana’ is funding the competition. The ground work is done by the publisher. The term ground work includes, but not limited to, giving paper reports, deciding and interfacing with the judges, maintaining the database of stories, announcing the results in paper, publishing the book of winning stories and organizing the book releasing and prize distribution function, etc.

We received 200+ stories from nooks and corner of Karnataka. We formed 2 panels of judges (All judges are distinguished writers or critics and we are not revealing their name as a matter of policy). We identified 12 winners. For the complete list of the winners please follow this link - http://thatskannada.oneindia.in/news/2006/04/11/kathana_ugadi.html

The book is published by Raghavendra Prakashana and the book release function (a day long literary event) was held on April 16h in Ankola. Please follow this link to read more about the book releasing function.
http://thatskannada.oneindia.in/news/2006/04/15/ankola.html

What are the details of the book?
The book contains 12 winning stories and is of 144 pages. The book price is 70 Rs. The book will be available in all the leading book stores (Sapna, Ankita etc.) once it is released. We are currently exploring the options of selling the book through our network, so that readers won’t have to go to a book store to get the book. We will let you know the details once we finalize our marketing strategy.

Please write to Kathana.qns@gmail.com to reserve your book.

How is this initiative different from others?
There are few other State level competitions which are conducted by some leading Kannada newspapers. However this is the first time that the book releasing and prize distribution functions are held on the same day.

One of our distinguished judges opined that this Katha Spardhe is conducted in a more professional manner than any other Katha Spardhe held so far. All the stories have gone through rigorous scrutiny and the final 25 stories have been evaluated by two panels of judges.

This is a non-profit initiative taken by a group of young software engineers (40+ members) to do something tangible in the field of Kannada Literature. We need your support to make this successful.

A movie I liked

Kandahar - This movie was made in 2000 based on a real story, fictionalized for the movie. Nilofer was living in Afghanistan and her family fled Kabul in 1988 when the war broke out under Communist regime of Russia. They had to walk for ten days leaving everything that belonged to them in Kabul. She completed her degree in journalism in 1991. In 1998 she received a letter from her friend Dyana (childhood friend in Kabul). Dyana wrote that she no longer believed that living under Taliban was worthwhile. Nilofer thought Dyana will attempt suicide and embarks on a journey to Kabul to persuade and save her. However midway through her journey she is convinced by refugees that the journey into Taliban area is too dangerous. Nilofer ends her quest and returns to Makhmalbaf, the master director of Irani movies.

Nilofer had seen some of Makhmalbaf's movies like Cyclist which had a softer corner to Afghan refugees. However Makhmalbaf says that he shot those movies in Iran and Pakistan and he did not know anything about Afghanistan. Disappointed and dejected Nilofer returns to Canada. She received a call after two years from Makhmalbaf. They venture onto make a movie based on the true story fictionalized for the movie. The movie was made with the help of Afghan refugees in Iran. In the movie Nilofer is searching for her sister and continues her journey to the outskirts of Kabul. The movie records the experiences of Nilofer's journey. It is absorbing and devastating.

Though this movie won the Jury prize in Cannes film festival in 2001, it was only after Sept 11 attack, that the movie became famous worldwide. The movie was watched with a new perspective, with a willingness to note and respond to the terrible living conditions in one part of the world.

Makhmalbaf was born in a poor family in Iran and he went to work at the age of 7. He had worked in 10 different jobs by the age of 16. He was then involved in one Muslim organization and fought against the regime of Iran. He was caught and jailed for 5 years from 1974 to 1979. 10 years from then he was one of the best directors in Iran. His wife and even his daughters have directed movies!

I have not seen Cyclist. But I know the story and heard that it is very good.
