I met a guy yesterday. He was nice, friendly and started off without any hesitation
" You from India?"
"Yes. I am. And you?"
"I am from Brazil"
"Nice. What do you do here?"
"I work as a maintenance mechanic in an apartment. I know few people from India who stay in our apartment. They are nice."
"Oh, that's nice. How is it in Brazil? It must be beautiful. I have seen 'the motorcycle diaries'. How is life there?"
It was a lengthy response "It is not at all good. You can't live a good life there. You can earn only if you have good degree, you know, like lawyers, doctors, dentists. They have good life. Others, they just don't. If I do the same mechanic job there....foooffff... no value, no money. But, you, computer guys, have good value. You can earn a lot. They say Brazil is a poor country. But you know, only rich can live there. Poors... no value, no value.....The standard of living is very poor."

I was reading a magazine. It was about the fading 'American dreams' and a solution to reverse the trend. The initial few lines goes thus...
"Over the last couple of centuries millions of people left their countries and landed in America, most of them penniless, to pursue what is today known as "American dreams". The American dream is the one which enabled upward mobility in the economic status for the hardworking individual. Each generation worked hard, accumulated material goods and wealth, and dreamt of a better standard of living for the next generation. The migrants could afford a standard of living, which only a privileged few could afford in their motherland......"

I was watching an interview of renowned director Godfrey Reggio. He was talking about standard of living.
"Who are we to set standard of living? Every culture has its own standard of living. The cultures in Asia, India, Africa, the Middle East and South America are land-based, human-scale societies and are very close to nature. We can't compare it with our materialistic societies. Our model of growth is unsustainable. However, lure of technology and mega-cities are affecting small-scale indigenous cultures. The "progress" is luring more and more people into a pattern of meaningless consumption in place of real values."
*** This is a summary of what Godfrey Reggio said, and not the verbatim reproduction of his words.
